Geek Bearing Gifts

Geek Bearing Gifts by Milly Taiden

Goodreads Rating: 5 stars

Audible Rating: 5 stars

Out of the entire series, thus far, Geek Bearing Gifts is my favorite. I am officially in love with WereBears. I already loved them because of Ramsey (Jessica Sim’s Midnight Liaisons series), but Ky….mmmm :). One thing that I did not like was that Nita did not figure out that the man she was set up with by Gerry was the same Ky she knew growing up. I am not sure how she did not connect that the werebear she knew growing up, Kyle, who lived in the same area she was heading to meet the man named Ky for a weekend date, MIGHT have been the same person. I was also aggravated that Ky went the whole time NOT telling her who he was!!! That would have pissed me off as much as it did Nita also!!  This book is full of hot sex and sweet romance that makes you fall in love with a super sweet man. It is based on a past life between two people that meet again when they are adults and one does not realize while the other does. Ky knows that it is Nita because Nita is his mate, but Nita does not realize it is Ky as she is human.

One of my favorite parts about the book is the epilogue, in which Gerry reads a letter or has an interaction that sets up for the next book!

Short and sweet review, for a short and sweet book.

Nailed

Goodreads Rating: 2 Stars (And I feel I am being pretty generous…)

(Part 1)
I wanted to complete this review as soon as I finished the book, instead of waiting a few days (or weeks…or months even) to collect my thoughts. I really wanted to enjoy this book, and though there were aspects that I did enjoy, there was just too much WRONG with this book.

First, no editor is perfect. Every now and then, an error may slip through the cracks, and that is okay. I usually chuckle and continue on. But there were a few times I found myself re-reading a sentence over again to make sure I read it correctly. I have a hard time accepting or liking a book in which grammatical errors get in the way of enjoying the story.

Second, the story was just okay. This entire series is going to be based on nothing but lies and sex. The tiny glimpse of the sex scene wasn’t bad. There was a slow buildup of heat between Emma and Conrad. I felt bad for Conrad and the trick his sister, Violet, and Emma were playing on him.

For the purpose that this review is over a short part of this book, the last point I will mention is that there was a lot of inner dialogue that was unnecessary and didn’t really add any benefits to the overall story. I found myself getting lost, re-reading or just skimming through. Skimming through some paragraphs didn’t take away from the overall story, which goes to show, since it neither added nor took away from the story, it wasn’t needed.

Twice the Yuuuuummmmmm

22934093

Twice the Growl by Milly Taiden

Goodreads Rating: 4 stars

Audible/Narrator Rating: 4 stars (Lauren Sweet)

I have noticed that my Audible wishlist is PAGES long, primarily due to my mom continuously adding books after books after books she finds and adds. This particular book, Twice the Growl, was discovered in this list and I thought it sounded like a good quick listen. It did not disappoint.

First off, Gerry is very entertaining, and if I wasn’t a happily involved young lady, I would happily have her set me up with one of her hot hunks ;). These books are very short and very sweet, yet a lot of story is packed between the sheets…pun intended.

I will admit, I do not always read or listen to, books that include multiple partners, which is weird, because I have read every single Anita Blake Vampire Hunter book, but this was a very specific book in which I have not been exposed to. In this particular story, Gerry needed to set up a wolf “pair” with a female to complete their alpha triad. In order to complete the triad, each wolf/man would need to be in agreement with the woman. Their wolf had to accept the woman as the third as much as the man does, if the wolf does not accept the mate, then the triad is not complete.

One issue about this book, due to it being a shorter book, falling in love tends to happen quickly. Everything happens instantaneously. However, the admitting it openly to each other happens at a slower, more realistic, pace.

Rebel Spring

Rebel Spring by Morgan Rhodes

Goodreads rating: 5 stars

When I read a series, and it has been a while between books, I find it hard to write a review. So I like to look at the previous book’s review to see why I felt a particular way for one book and how I felt with the new book. The Falling Kingdoms series, thus far, has been a good read. It can sometimes be confusing, because multiple stories are going on at the same time. A few of the main characters each tell about different situations that happened to them and eventually by the end of the book, all stories and characters come full circle and connect together.

If you like The Game of Thrones and want a book series in a similar genre, The Falling Kingdoms would be a good start. In the very first book, a murder occurred within a few pages. It set the tone for the entire book which ended in more blood, some interestingly sketchy and unexpected love triangles, some more death and a whole lot of betrayal. So, after finishing the first book with a bang, I had similar expectations for book 2. Let me say, it delivered. There was even more betrayal, more blood, and more death. Like GoT, do not get too attached to characters, they have a bad habit of dying. The story continued, multiple perspectives going on and eventually leaving you feeling even more confused, emotionally distraught and somewhat hopeful. Due to how both books ended, I am reluctant, nervous and excited all rolled into one to finish this series out. Rebel Spring has been my favorite book by far. There was a significant amount of character growth for ALL characters. A lot of questions were answered, however, more questions needing answers filled that gap.

The kicker to this series? It is classified as a YA series…seriously. I have read quite a bit of YA in my life, and I only recall reading one other series that surprised me as being YA (Cate Tiernan’s Sweep series).

Deep Trouble

Deep Trouble by R.L. Stine

Goodreads Rating: 3 stars

I am going on an adventure and re-buying and reading Goosebumps books. I loved these books as a child. My favorites are Say Cheese and Die and Say Cheese and Die, Again. I enjoyed reading them when I was younger. In fact, if I had to pinpoint a book or series that really sucked me into reading, it would be the Goosebumps series. I don’t recall ever reading this particular book, but it is possible that I did. I remember some of these books used to scare me, and make me want to keep the lights on. I have to say, Deep Trouble was not my favorite. I know in Mr. Stine’s books that usually one of the characters is a bratty kid, but something about Billy really didn’t sit well with me. The Goosebump books also used to take me all day to read. And I was always super excited when I finished them in one sitting…my how I have grown eh?!

The Little Prince

The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery

Narrated by Humphrey Bower

Goodreads rating: 5 stars

Audible rating: 5 stars

I read this book in French class YEARS ago (12 to be exact), so I couldn’t really remember much about the story. Also, some things were lost in translation. I have to say, I really enjoyed this book. I am not even sure how to write a review on it. There is a reason this is a beloved classic. The story the Little Prince tells to the narrator is amazing. I found myself laughing, smiling and even a bit teary-eyed throughout the course of this story. Humphrey Bower was believable in his narration. You could hear and feel the emotions through the story and his interpretation of the Little Prince. There isn’t much more I can really say for this book. It does not need a review to express it’s greatness.

Hunted By Herne

22066872

Hunted by Herne by Stella Inox

Goodreads rating: 3 Stars

I happened upon the second book in this series that was up for grabs for a review. So, I decided to read the first one so that maybe I could get my hands on a copy of the sequel. This book was a quick read and was very different. Herne the Hunter is a horned god of sorts in English Folklore.

Carin, a brilliant thief, prepared a job for weeks to get into a hidden vault in the basement of a museum. When she is finally able to crack the vault open, she sees a tree inside instead of the jewels and gold she had been hoping for. She goes in, and a golden collar is placed around her neck. As she continues walking through, Herne greets her. Herne is supposed to be gorgeous, Fae, loaded with the promise of sex until death. After some witty banter, wet panties, and Fae teasing, Herne explained that she was to run and he would catch her and kill her. He taunted her on this brief hunt. He chased her right up to his house. He convinced her to allow him to have his way with her until the sun came up, she did. The sex scene was pretty damn good to be honest. The next morning, he asked her to be his slave for the rest of her life. She eventually consented; she knew she was not getting out of this Otherworld ever.

I won’t give away the ending; you will have to experience that for yourself. I will warn you, it is a doozie.

I gave this book 3 stars because even though it was short, I felt there was too much emphasis on the beginning of the book in her preparations of robbing the museum vault and not other aspects of the story. I felt, as the title states Hunted, more would be included about the hunt. The hunt only lasted a chapter or two, followed by sex, sex and more sex, followed by an ending that will blow your brains out. A little more information and development on Herne would have been great as well. I felt like I knew Carin pretty well, but it was hard to understand Herne’s perspective aside from his arrogance and narcissism. Watching him taunt Carin wasn’t as fun when I didn’t know much about Herne to begin with. If you do know about English Folklore such as Herne, you may enjoy this book a little more. I just didn’t get it.

One last thing, I never usually judge cover art on a review, but that cover is just awkward. It looks like a bad photoshop of horns to a supposedly handsome man. If you read this book, the description of Herne does not match that cover. I found myself staring at it often trying to figure out what it was supposed to prove, show and why it was so awkward.

The Glass Magician

22341276

The Glass Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

Narrated by Amy McFadden

Goodreads Rating: 4 stars

Audible Rating: 5 stars

This is the second book in The Paper Magician Trilogy. I must admit, if you have read my review on The Paper Magician, I was glad that this story had more to it. There was an actual storyline, Ceony wasn’t stuck in a never ending scene going from one ventricle in the heart to another. Between The Paper Magician and The Glass Magician, Ceony had a lot of character development. The author shows a lot of overall development as well.

I am hoping that the budding romance will move from “hints” to full on admitting that Ceony and Thane love each other. I understand that Thane cannot admit or act on his feelings for the fact that he is Ceony’s mentor and that would be wrong and is highly frowned upon. I do, however, feel that Ceony was constantly fighting herself and the feelings she has for Thane. It is almost crippling, to Ceony and to her magic. I believe that eventually it will filter through to the point of stunting her abilities. It is hard reading a book in which the protagonist is constantly going back and forth if their romantic feelings are valid and they are constantly searching out validation in their feelings from loved ones and friends.

Amy McFadden delivered amazingly, once again. I have not been disappointed yet by an audiobook that she has narrated. She is great at delivering believable emotions and making Ceony relatable. I will continue to listen to any book McFadden narrates due to the pleasurable experiences she brings!

Craving Her Biker

24684317

Craving Her Biker by Juniper Leigh

Goodreads Rating: 3 stars.

As I am sitting here thinking about how to write a review on this story, I realize that I don’t 100% remember much about the story; which leads me to wonder how in the world I gave it 3 stars. I believe the sex scene where her and her somewhat husband/ex/estranged lover are driving home from the hospital and they stop on the side of the road and he takes her right there…outside of the truck, with her bent over the driver’s seat. I think that is the one scene that made me give it a higher rating. This book was a quick read. Kind of boring, sometimes didn’t really understand what was going on or what was the purpose. It is the first in a series. Maybe in the next part more is clarified. There are a lot of holes and this story is in serious need of character and plot development.

Teach Me Something New

19303382

Teach Me Something New pt 1 by Summer Olsen

Goodreads Rating: 3 stars

Currently, a really big trend in the romance genre is the subgenre of BDSM. Though this genre is not new, thanks to 50 Shades, this subgenre is getting more notice. Teach Me Something New Pt. 1 is no different in this trend.  It is a relatively Free short story, ends on a cliffhanger, making you purchase all of the other parts (which at this time I have not…). The whole premise of the story is Lucy is in Grad School. She decides to take a literature class as to observe and she meets the most delicious professor. She doesn’t take things seriously, talks out of turns, and berates other students. After class, she goes to the professor’s office; notices that the door is unlock and snoops around. She finds some BDSM type magazines in his desk drawer. This gets her wheels going, she begins fantasizing at home, and researching everything she can about BDSM and what it might be like. To make a short story shorter, Professor McDelicious starts taking notice in her, reading “smut” books she suggests, and then, to top it all off…he starts becoming her Dom…very slowly.

There weren’t any spectacular scenes. No smutty, slutty sexy scenes. Some spankings of course, because let’s face it, Lucy is NOT a good little girl, if you catch my drift. Through the story she is given “tests” and “Tasks.” The author slowly builds up a heat, but offers no release in this part. I will eventually get around to reading the others. I am hoping this story offers some promise and will deliver on the budding heat between Lucy and her delicious professor.
