Dominated by Two Dragons

Dominated by two dragons

Dominated by Two Dragons by Cynthia Mendoza, Narrated by Melissa Barr

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Goodreads Rating: 4 stars

I received this audiobook through Audiobook Boom in exchange for my honest review.

I really like dragon shifter romance/erotica. Not sure why, I have never really liked Dragons in general. I was pretty excited to listen to this book, but it was too short!!!!

I do enjoy short stories, really, but I like when there are multiple parts, or like a mini series. This was not that. I have looked, so maybe I am wrong, but the book was just too short! 😦 I felt it could have been a little longer in order for the reader/listener to understand and fully appreciate the base of the story. I also felt the sex scene wasn’t as fantastic as it could have been.

I did find it entertaining when the brothers went to the dragon club. I thought the scene when the possible “entertainment” for the night, found out he was one of the twins and backed up and ran out!

I will definitely give more of Mendoza’s books a go, she definitely piqued my interest!

***ABOUT THE AUTHOR***
LK Shaw is a physical therapist assistant by day and writer/social media addict by night. She resides in South Carolina with her high maintenance beagle mix dog, Miss P, who should probably just have her own Instagram account. An avid reader since childhood, she became hooked on historical romance novels in high school. It wasn’t until within the last seven or eight years she tried her hand at contemporary romances. While historical romance remains one of her favorite go-to genres, romantic suspense, especially with a little kink thrown in, have become a first pick from her TBR list.
She initially began writing in November 2015 as part of National Novel Writing Month, when, suddenly, the story became something more than just a “sure, I’ll try to put some words together”. The vision for the story snowballed and, before she knew it, she began taking steps toward publishing. Each book in her first series feature Romantic Suspense and BDSM combined.

Scary School

10062358

Goodreads Rating: 3 stars

Narrator Rating: 3 stars

I received a copy of this book through Audiobook Boom for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not paid or bribed for this review.

I found this story to be different. I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. There were parts that were really annoying (“more about that in book 2”, “more about that in another book”…).

A quick synopsis: This story takes place at an elementary school for human kids and scary kids (werewolves, sasquatch, zombies, vampires) are taught by dragons, t-rex, giants, vampires, and other scary individuals. This particular story hosts the Ghoul Games in which scary kids from other scary schools come to Scary School to compete in various games (jump rope, playing dead, checkers, etc).  The book is written by a “kid” who was killed during a fear gas fire and turned into a ghost, named Derek.  The book is also narrated by Derek the Ghost.

I requested a review copy because I work with children, and I am always on the lookout for great books that my clients would like to listen to whenever we are on a long car ride. I think for the age group this book targets, it is enjoyable. My big qualm with it is that it just didn’t feel like much happened. I started listening to it, and before I knew it, the whole story was finished but nothing much happened. It had a climax, as books do, but I just expected more. I felt that this book had promise and it could have really delivered, but missed out somewhere. I wish that this book had more about the Ghoul Games in it. I felt that section of the book was too short. Most of the book is focused on various events leading up to the particular games, but falls short once it is the time for Ghoul Games to begin.

If my clients would like to listen, I would let them. It was clean, good, fun for kids. I will probably listen to all of the books, just because I have that tendency when there are multiples.

Crave

Crave

Crave by Erzabet Bishop

Goodreads Rating: 4 stars

I was given a copy of Crave by the author for my honest review. I was really excited to start reading Erzabet Bishop’s books. I started with Crave first. I never read the preview of the book on Goodreads, so the story line was an honest surprise.

Overall, I liked it. I liked that it was erotic, bdsm, and a suspense/crime story all in one. Linnett starts out as a sub of an apparently gorgeous Dom. One evening while waiting for her Dom to show up to their favorite BDSM club, Crave, Linnett was forced into interacting with a visiting Dom. This Dom hurt Linnett and once she was released from the hospital, she disappeared, became a cop, and then became a Domme that visited Crave masked and hidden from any of her friends. Over the 7 year period from the incident up to current, the Dom that hurt Linnett got away. Every year around that date, this Dom went to random BDSM clubs and killed a woman who looked similar to Linnett. Linnett became a police officer after the event and eventually was put on this case because she lives the lifestyle and could understand the crime scenes better than the coworkers currently working the murders.

As a mini spoiler, I ALWAYS take a star when an animal dies in the story, especially if the animal was MURDERED. When the pet is a predominant character, I deduct more stars (here’s looking at you Patrick Ness!!!!). So, I almost stopped reading when Linnett’s cat was murdered by a serial killer out searching for Linnett. Not okay.

Other than that, I really enjoyed this story. I liked the bedroom scenes, I liked the overall character sketches of each character. I am very glad of how it ended. I look forward to reading more from Erzabet Bishop!

The Last Boy and Girl in the World

The Last Boy and Girl in the World by Siobhan Vivian, narrated by Jorjeana Marie

Goodreads Rating: 2 stars

Narrator Rating: 5 stars

I semi enjoyed  The List by Siobhan Vivian, so when this book came out, I decided to give it a go. I was severely disappointed for all the same reasons I was bummed by The List.

The narrator brought to life Keely’s massive annoying character sketch. The story ended much the same way The List did, and seemed to have all the same issues. This story is supposed to be about a city that is about to be flooded out, and these group of friends having the times of their lives before everyone goes a separate way. The way the story starts, at the end, made me think other events were going to happen. I didn’t expect who the Last Boy would be.

Every group of friends in high school had the Keely and Jesse type. The types that jokes too much because they don’t want to have anything other than superficial conversation. Keely just really made the whole book horrible. This book had a lot of promise and intrigue, and it did not deliver. I had to force myself to listen and finish the book.

Jorjeana Marie’s narration style really elevated this book. She really, truly, brought to life Keely’s annoying personality and quirks. I actually felt bad for Keely. Not because of everything that happened, but because she was totally oblivious to how her personality was being perceived.

Overall, The Last Boy and Girl in the World has the typical story-line that you find in YA, only it really falls short. I had to force myself to finish. I typically will not finish a book if I have to force myself. I was really disappointed. I felt like I was truly back in high school, but not any of the pleasant feelings associated with it.

In playing devil’s advocate, I know that every story is supposed to have struggle for the main character. This story has plenty of struggle, however, it took too long to get to the point, the end seemed to take longer than was necessary, and Keely was too whiny and annoying. This is not a book i would recommend. At all. i do, however, recommend the narrator. i have heard her in other stories and she is fantastic. I am just sorry she was connected to a book that failed the way it did.

Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Goodreads Rating: 3 stars

There is a lot of hype surrounding Sarah J. Maas’ series, Throne of Glass, and I was oddly disappointed. I enjoyed the book, but I kept finding myself waiting for that OMG moment that seems to have so many readers sucked into the story line, but it never came.

I did like Celaena’s overall personality and disposition. I also liked seeing the growth from the time she was removed from the death camp, until the end of the story. I like that she grew to CARE and recognize she had a makeshift family, even if it meant the horror it did.

The reason this story is only 3 stars for me is 1) I have read more intriguing stories in this realm of YA and even Fantasy; 2) There are very specific scenes in the book that built and built and then just faltered and did not live up to what should have been. I am sorry, but an intense fight scene in which souls from the In-Between should have lasted more than 2ish pages and should have had more details, before and after. I felt that way about that entire scene as a whole. I know some of the unanswered questions will be answered later, and I will eventually get to those books, but a lot of incidents/feelings/interactions were rushed and more information/feelings could have been put into the situation for the reader to get more from it.

I wish I felt the way everyone else did, but this is one hype that I felt was overhyped.

Kick The Candle

Kick The Candle

Kick The Candle by Genevieve Jack

Narrated by Brittany Pressley

Goodreads Rating: 4 Stars

Narration Ration: 5 Stars

Kick the Candle  is the second installment of the Knight Games series by Genevieve Jack. Kick the Candle  was a great follow up to the first book The Ghost and the Graveyard in that a lot of issues were resolved, and new issues presented itself.

This riveting follow up had the right amount of every element needed to make a successful paranormal romance: steamy sex scenes; horrible scary monsters; the friendly big bad wolf; a lot of asskicking action, and a whole lot of suspense. Listening to the book had me intrigued throughout the book, though I will admit, the beginning started too slow for me. I listened to the last 3 hours of the book on a work trip, in which I was driving, and let me say, if you plan on listening to this book, do not drive a vehicle!!! I kept gasping and clenching my steering wheel trying to maintain control over the car!

I gave it 4 stars because I did feel that some concepts were over sold or dragged out. There were times I felt Grateful was too whiny. This is not a YA, and not NA either. It is a woman who has made some bad love decisions, discovering she is a witch reborn over centuries, and trying to come to terms with her Caretaker. I understand that is a lot to hold on her shoulders, but no need to beat a dead horse.

My favorite character in this book is Poe, her Raven familiar. I thought he was fantastic. His wit and charm is catchy, while also maintaining his heroic ferocity! I also enjoyed the newer characters that were “hidden” in the first book. I found the Leprechaun very entertaining, even if he was the bad guy.

I do not want to give away the end, but I am happy with how it ended. I am curious and excited for the next installment and what the next adventure will be with Grateful and her delicious Caretaker, Rick.

I highly recommend the series, and if you like Audiobooks, I equally suggest listening. Pressley is a great narrator. She strives to create a voice profile for each character that is enamoring and charming, striving to match the character’s personality.

The Hidden Oracle

The Hidden Oracle

The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan

Goodreads Rating: 3 stars

Actual Rating: 3.5 Stars

I am normally a HUGE supporter of anything Rick Riordan. This book rubbed me the wrong way on so many levels that I am having a hard time comprehending what I actually read.

I didn’t like how modernized the book was. Not that his other books weren’t modern, I just felt weird with multiple Social Media sites, bands, etc were constantly referenced. I understand that Apollo is a bit self centered (okay more than a bit). I just thought it was too much. To the point of annoying. Feeling this way makes me so sad. I can usually overlook such actions, because it is the character, and I try to have that mindset.

I will continue with the story, but for once, I am saddened that I just was not head over heals for this book 😦

I do think that the age range it is meant for will enjoy it. I believe it has a lot of promise, and by the end of the book, I noticed a change in Apollo’s behaviors and thought processes. My only hope is this continues and that self centered, crap, attitude he has falters and he becomes someone you want to be around. I won’t give away the ending, but I was VERY happy to see it. Much like the new Magnus Chase series, I was happy to see old favorites and meet new loves!

Goodreads Rating: 4 stars

This story is about Penny, who never seems to find happiness in her relationships. Each one is the same, unfulfilling, boring, vanilla, relationship. Penny finds herself just going through the motions in relationships and in life. One day, Penny decides to go to a vanialla, BDSM picnic. There she met Marcus.

*Side Point* This is my vision of Marcus:

tumblr_m2zjmlcBgi1qih6lso1_500

Marcus, like most Doms, can easily spot Penny out for what she is. Over the next week or so, Marcus and Penny begin a D/s relationship. Penny falls in love with Marcus, which, sometimes happens in a D/s relationship.

I won’t go more into the story, because it will provide way too many spoilers. I will, however, talk about how I feel about this story.

16b1519e-9f5e-42dd-b2ec-0422c802caf9

One, I feel like MORE in depth sex scenes would have been nice. I feel that it is a little too Light BDSM for me. I know it was an “intro” for Penny, and Marcus, as a good Dom, really was trying to introduce Penny slowly. But, sometimes, you just kind of have to jump in and go for it 🙂 Second, the “climax” of the story, I wish there was a smidgen more. There are certain scenes that just kind of happen, and we never really know. Again, I can’t go into it without giving spoilers.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast and easy read. There were some grammatical errors, but the story was still enjoyable. I think it is a great intro story for D/s relationships. It also touches on briefly determining the difference between abuse and appropriate in D/s relationships.

My only wish was that there were more D/s non-vanilla encounters. I felt that it was a little PG13 for what it could have been. I feel it is okay to really dig into some of the toys and aspects of BDSM beyond some spanking and tying up to the bed. I also thought the menage encounter was good, but again, wished it had a little more BDSM. It is a light BDSM story.

Overall, I really did enjoy it. I could picture Marcus as this rustic, gorgeous, older man. I like that this story had an older man, and was not really NA Erotica. The same for Penny. I do like that she was older and that she had her life together (ish).

LK Shaw lives in South Carolina with her highly spoiled and extremely needy beagle-mix pup. She began reading at an early age and devoured as many books as she could. Her favorite authors as a young teen were Christopher Pike and RL Stine. During the summer between her junior and senior years of high school, she ran out of books and asked her mom to loan her one of her “stupid romances”, and then she regretted ever calling them stupid. Because from that first book, she was hooked and hasn’t stopped reading them since. At one time, she owned over 1000 romance novels. Some of her favorite historical romance authors include Christi Caldwell, Courtney Milan, Mary Balogh, and Tessa Dare. Some of her favorite contemporary romance authors include Julia Sykes, Ella Dominguez, Skye Callahan, and Meghan March.

The Iron King

the iron king

Goodreads Rating: 3 Stars

Actual Rating: 3.5 Stars

Narrator Rating: 4 stars

My Goodreads group selected The Iron King for our April read. A little side note on the Iron King- George RR Martin has stated this series inspired his Game of Thrones.

The Iron King is based on Philip the Fair, King of France. It is medieval historical fiction. I love Medieval history, so it was very exciting. My issues with the story: there are soooooo many characters that I had a hard time keeping who was in (in my defense someone who read the literal book had the same problem), there was too much constantly going on, and there wasn’t enough treachery/double cross/excitement for me. The story was TOO factual. Never thought I would say that. I was hoping that the author would take the history lesson and give it a fun spin to it, since it is supposed to be fiction. And though he did give it life, it wasn’t a very good life. Not to me anyways. I found myself constantly checking how much time I had left.

I thought the narrator was good. Some of his voices for characters cracked me up. I have not had experience with the narrator Peter Joyce. I may give him another shot if he narrates books outside of this series.

All in all, this has just been an okay read for me. Part 2 was the best section of the whole book. The rest was just slow.
