The Grim Reaper’s Lawyer

by Mea Monique

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

The Grim Reaper’s Lawyer was the book of the month read for The Spicy Book Club. This review may contain spoilers, but also not really. It focuses on Joyce, who is a defense attorney, which she hates. She is falling out of love with her career, and decides to say fuck it all the way off, and quits. She finishes up her last case, which she lost, and her client promptly killed her. She was collected by a Grim Reaper named Aiden and taken to Eden. Aiden is being charged with violating 3 rules from the Reapers’ Code of Conduct, which she rejects doing and spends several days in “hell”, which is really only a few minutes.

This story follows their love/hate, grumpy/sunshine, story. Aiden is kind of a jerk, but also a total daddy…I mean baddie. I mean baddie. When he finally says “to hell with it” (quite literally) and allows them to purse the steam that has been building, it is hot. The story is a slow burn up until they decide to pursue a sexual relationship with each other. The agreement provided to Joyce is, she wins Aiden’s case, she goes to Heaven, instead of Hell (which she was slated for).

Joyce meets a variety of characters that become great friends. Each character brings out a fun side of Joyce that really makes you fall in love with her. The book is hilarious from start to finish. It does end on a cliffhanger and I have no idea when book 2 comes out as this book did not release until December 2022. The book is easy to figure out and ends how you want it to, but the journey was still fun!!

I tell you what, the book had an opening quote that I am STILL thinking about and had to share— “For those who feel that you must water yourself down for others- Let them choke.” Man, what words to live by!! I needed this when I was younger.

Overall, I would say the spice level is around a 3.5-4. I felt it took a bit too long to get to anything sexy, but when it did, it was quite a bit. Those two were like rabbits…but I guess it is the year of the rabbit isn’t it LOL. They could not keep their paws off of each other and Aiden is a total Dom. So we ship and approve.

Having said all of this, it was enjoyable. I laughed so much during the story. It was a very light read and I am looking forward to more in this series and from this author!

Viridios

This book is the first in a series. It is not a complete series at this time. It is set in the future after Earth has become overcrowded. Colonies of people are moving to new planets along with scientists to study the life forms. In this story, the main female character, Alaya, loves studying the ecosystem of the planet she is currently inhabiting. Alaya is not quite like the other humans who live there. They are very closed off and more extremist in their thoughts and approved customs. One day, Alaya is studying spores, when suddenly the ground rose up around her and a giant tree being sprouted. He captures her and tries to keep her as his pet. He does not understand why, but he has a strong desire to keep her and protect her. The story continues following through their growing bond and learning to communicate. I wont give any spoilers away 🙂

The story itself is quite unique. As someone who enjoys alien romance, this one was new to me. The trope is one you see a lot, insta love/fated mates, but I like how it was delivered. There was one sexy scene when he was still in tree form, which definitely was interesting! Steam wise, there is not a lot of spicy scenes, but the romance was still nice.

I gave the story 4 stars overall because of its uniqueness. It was also well written. It is not a terribly long read and can be read in one sitting. I hope more books come out in the series, because the ending set it up for more. If you are a fan of alien romance and want one that does not have much conflict, this is a good read to pick up. Sometimes having a nice palate cleanser between heavy reads is good, and this definitely helped! 🙂

Rhage: A Monster Rockstar Romance

By R.K. Pierce

4 Stars

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book is about a demon band that tours around playing music. Our FMC loves the band and is determined to meet the lead singer Sebastian Alex. Fate works out for her and she scores tickets to the concert in her town and a backstage pass to meet him. When he sees her, it was instalove though he didn’t quite process it to be that, he just knows he wants to feed off of her essence.

This book is the first in a series that will circle around each of the band mates. I am looking forward to reading the rest!

I did think the book took a little too long getting to the point where they meet and there wasn’t much left of the book for their actual relationship, so the last part of the book felt a little rushed. I felt there were still some unanswered questions by the end. The author did add an extra chapter and an epilogue, which I did enjoy as well, but still felt like some information was missing. As far as spice level goes, it was spicy with the few scenes that were given. And let’s just say, if you know you know, but I need one. LOL. I do think it could have had more spice had they been able to meet sooner. I also feel like when she sold her soul, it got a little short changed and could have been a little more grand because she sold her soul.

Other than those few things, I really did enjoy this book. I still have some unanswered questions, but I want to read more. I thought the trope was unique, but maybe it’s unique to me, because I have not read a lot of monster rockstar romances. I will say there may be a possible trigger warning, but overall that scene ends well.

Club Monstrum

By Rene Hunt

5 Stars

Club Monstrum is a short book that packs a punch. If you are looking for a book that has all the heat of a Carolina Reaper, then pick up this book. Club Monstrum is a Sex Club where someone can go and explore a variety of Monsters. Star does not want the run of the mill, usual monster, such as a werewolf, vampire, or fae….oh no…she wants ALL OF THE BADDIES. This book has some small amount of plot…Star ends up creating a reverse harem with the men she indulges on at the Club, but other than that, is it page after page of sexy sex. It is 69 pages of nothing but sex, I don’t even think the story went more than one page without some kind of sexy scene in it. Star is a pretty cool leading lady. She is the only human who takes into account the needs and desires of the monsters too, treating them like people, at least in these particular monsters’ experiences. No human man has ever been able to sexually satisfy Star, so these Monsters make it their personal mission to have her exploding below them.

If you need something quick and easy, this is one of those reads. The author makes it known at the beginning you don’t read this book for the plot line, you read it for the sex. If graphic sex is not your thing, this book should be a pass 🙂

Wolves Love Red

Wolves Love Red: An Erotic Bedtime Story by C.C. Genovese

Rating: 5 stars

This is my first book I have read by this author. It is a quick read, but very intriguing. It follows a werewolf, named Valan, who catches the scent of Red, a rather ravishing woman. On the night the werewolf first gets a whiff of Red, he can hardly contain himself. He begins pleasuring himself in a nearby alley, however, he has to immediately run to the woods because when he orgasms, he howls, and he did not want to alert the town of his presence. He goes off into the woods where he has a wild romp with another wolf, named Fiona. Fiona asks about the woman who had him fired up like that, but he is reluctant to really give away anything.

The next day he goes looking for Red again, because he really wants her. He discovers she is bringing some sex toys to grandma’s house, who happens to be the town bicycle. He comes up with the idea to go to Grandma’s house to wait for Red to get there. Instead, he comes across Fiona. Fiona again is curious about the woman who has Valan so wound up. Fiona suggests taking Grandma off his hands, because Fiona heard she likes blonde bombshells, so that Valan can have his woman. Fiona takes Grandma and her current client off into another room, so when Red comes in and sees a very naked, human Valan, she becomes entranced. Valan is very well endowed, which is mentioned several times. So there is a lot of foreplay to help Red take him.

I will not give away the ending, because it was so amazingly unexpected. I really enjoyed this story overall. My issue I often have with short stories/novellas, is that many authors try to rush everything together. Some stories do not have a beginning, middle, and end. Wolves Love Red did have all parts to make a good story. It was easy to follow along with, it had the right amount of background information to set the scene, it had enough character development, and it didn’t feel like everything was rushed together. The sex scenes that were in the book were well written and very descriptive, so it was easy to imagine while you were reading it. Even though the story as a whole is good, the ending makes it all worth it. The ending is what takes this story out of the normal cookie cutter short story/erotic/paranormal/twisted retelling mold and makes it something completely unique.

Her Stepbrother is a Monster

Her Stepbrother is a Monster by Trinity Blacio

Rating: 5 stars

This book was provided by Netgalley and Riverdale Avenue Books in exchange for my honest review.

This book offered a bit of a different take on dragon shifters. I liked that it was pretty original in that sense. There were times, like I have indicated in the past, where a better editor is needed as sometimes it gets confusing on what I am reading.

Maven finds out that she is a dragon, her mother is a dragon, and that her father and new stepfather were also dragons at her mother and stepfather’s wedding. She also meets her mate, Azure there. Maven was in a horrible marriage where she was abused. Turns out, this guy was disguising himself and was also the cousin of Azure. She realizes this, also at the wedding, when she can’t figure out why she wants to deck this man she meets. Maven’s dragon is one of the original royal children who have not been seen for many years. Upon the awakening of this royal dragon, Chandrass, towards the end other royals start popping up as well.

I felt the story was way too short and that when things started getting good, it just ended and I was left very WTF-ish and had to check to see if that really was the end. There was not much sex, and to be honest, I forgot that they actually had sex the first time. The rest of the story is really what made this so great that I would give it a 5 star rating.

Ratings: 5 Stars

I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review and participation in this book blitz.

From the very first page, I knew this book would be a 5 star read. There was so much hot and so much sizzle, I had the highest of hopes from the get go. This book did not disappoint. This book moved in a consistent flow and there were never any dull moments. It really keeps the reader entranced.

When Isabella walks into the play party for the first time and Tristan lays his eyes on her, the reader can see the steam come off the page. The chemistry throughout the story is super hot and super steamy and perfect. Watching the struggle between Isabella and Tristan when they discovered the student-teacher status was really difficult, and I had hoped they would move through it and just proceed forward.

This story kept me hooked and I could not put it down. I hated when I had to put it down to do anything else.

My favorite quote in the story is “that’s why the submissive role is so alluring to people with demanding careers. Giving control to someone else doesn’t make you weak.” This really hit me hard, because it is something I had to acknowledge in my own life a long time ago. This story and it’s contents is well researched and well written. The BDSM is light, but still enjoyable. If this is a reader’s first time reading a book about BDSM, this would be a great opener.

Left My Heart in Sin City

29924021

Left My Heart in Sin City by Trinity Blacio

Rating: 4 stars

I am pretty sure I received a copy of this book from Netgalley…but when I search for it, I cannot find it anywhere…..

I really enjoyed the start of this series. It was interesting and original. I did get a little confused at the beginning as there were a lot of names that seemed to change later, but this wasn’t the case. It appeared that when a new friend came into the picture at this conference, that is when you met that particular person, however, it would jump back and forth so it was sometimes hard to follow.

This story is very fast paced, as usual. Other than the many friends issue, it is fairly easy to keep up. Also as usual, an editor is needed, but the story was still great and fun to read. I found it interesting that Jess felt kind of like the author a little bit.

I really fell in love with Maverick. I pictured him as this distinguished older gentleman. Like the man pictured below:

89cec9aa6304adb7e9f07ac7f8e97c61

I really liked the turn of events the story had. There were so many things going on all at once, you felt bad for everyone because it was like they could not get a break!! When I finished this book, I immediately wanted book 2 in the series. I want to know what happens, and who is this mysterious Derek? I would have liked some more info on him and I am not sure why did Jess never question that?! As much as she questioned EVERYTHING in the story, she didn’t question who this mysterious man out to get her, who POISONED her and just accepted it?? Oh well…it was still enjoyable. I wish there were more sex scenes, because Trinity Blacio writes some pretty amazing scenes, and this book did not have many.

Escaped

Escaped by Trinity Blacio

Goodreads: 4 stars

Actual Rating: 3.5 stars

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Escaped is the first book in the Running in Fear series by Trinity Blacio. I have really turned into a fan of Blacio and my expectations were high.

I want to start with what I did not like about this story. My biggest issue with the overall story is that the leading lady, Jaycee, had been brutally raped as a child, and was in an abusive relationship and entered into a relationship that she didn’t fully understand AND the  men in that relationship did not take into consideration what she has gone through. I believe that many instances of “control” are abusive in themselves. My fear has always been when BDSM relationships begin to boarder controlling, abusive, relationships. Blacio does clearly identify both of these in the story, however, I believe Jaycee’s mates are blurring the lines. I often find that the males in Blacio’s stories are bullheaded and need knocked down a peg or two.

I did like everything else in the story. I thought there was excitement, great sex, action, and romance. The story was fairly quickly and I was ready to move on to the second book immediately. As usual, I really enjoyed the sexy scenes and thought they were done nicely.

If you haven’t read one of Blacio’s stories, I do encourage it. My biggest remark to the publisher is that a better editor is needed. Sometimes the wrong names are used, as was the case in this story, and in another story I am reading, the setting is wrong. I think this can really turn off some new, potential, readers.

The Princess and The Clown

The Princess and The Clown by Ian Thomas Malone

Goodreads Rating: 2 stars

I was given a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

This book is an erotic satire, of which, I have never read before. I found it difficult to get through. I thought the relationship between Ralph and Jules was…toxic and interesting.

The sex scenes were a bit much, even I could hardly tolerate them. (and I can tolerate just about anything). The satire stems around the fact that both Ralph and Jules are “trailer trash.” Both are deadbeats with no future.

I learned that you can use hot sauce for anal lube. Which is weird, and I am not certain how that is okay for anyone to use. I actually had to stop when I read that to see if that was really a thing. It was definitely new to me. I still cringe thinking about it.

I wasn’t quite prepared for this story. I am sure there are people out there who will find it entertaining. I really enjoy erotica, so I feel this book was kind of a kick to the face and it didn’t make me feel happy. I didn’t connect with the grotesqueness of the characters.
