I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I am a sucker for alien books and for books that center around trashy reality love shows. So when I had the opportunity to read Falling for Love, I took it.
I want to get out my negative feelings first. I did not like the FMC (Emma) at all. I think my biggest negative take away is that the female participants in the show had such high expectations that many of the males could not reach them. Look, I get that these women have never knew aliens existed, but these alien males have never interacted with humans either. The women, at least Emma, provided no grace. In fact, through most of the book, it felt like only Emma’s needs and wants and expectations were important. Emma would constantly snap at and be mean to Zul. Sure, Zul was a strong, dominant, arrogant, male, but he at least took the time to make changes to himself and learn about human females. This misunderstanding about mates was the other issue. She understood what a mate meant to Kadran but was unforgiving to Zul and his “arrogance” which was really him just identifying her as his mate. This constant battle goes on for the whole book and I found myself hating Emma and unable to relate to her.
I did really like how fake it made the reality show feel. I feel like it brought a lot of authenticity to the story. There are multiple stories happening at one time, you get snippets of others in the book, but it really focuses mainly on Emma and eventually Zul. I also enjoyed the side characters. If I continue the series, my hope is that they provide a little more grace to the males, but we will see. I liked that each FMC shows enough about who they are that you should feel connected to them already by the time you get to their book. Same with the males. Some of the males are just kind of bleh, but there are males that have that main character energy and it will be fun to see those stories and interactions to play out. Finally, I enjoy a story that has the world building spread throughout the story instead of all at once. It helped the story flow and honestly, I like when stories do not lag from the get go. This story got right to the point in the first chapter or two.
