The Spellbroken King

By J.A. Keeton

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

This book is about a human who believes she is magicless, living in a world filled with magic and magical beings. While it is somewhat unclear truly of the nature of her arrest and blame when she is innocent, it starts with her being on the run from this demon bounty hunter (named Ominous). She is trying to get to this town that no magical creature or being can get to. Obviously she has no such luck, and the demon bounty hunter catches her and hauls her off to a cave before their eventual trip back to the governor who had her imprisoned and is OBSESSED with her. It was there, she learned his true identity and he learned she was his fated mate. From there it is a whirlwind of denial, coming together, spicy times, and a bunch of other spoilers.

This is a dark romantic fantasy. It is an ARC, so there were a few typos, but overall it is well written. There were some things that left me a little confused, and more clarity would be nice, but overall, I read it fast and enjoyed it. The book starts right out at her being hunted, and it really wasn’t until the end that everything gets pieced together, so sometimes that was a bit off-putting, or could be for readers.

It was interesting watching how Ominous reacts after becoming fated mates. He was absolutely appalled because she was a human and was planning on bringing her back anyways and forgetting all about her. As time went on, he could no longer even stand to be away from her and felt very protective of her. He definitely started having the “she’s mine,” and “touch her and d!e” vibes.

This book definitely has some nice twists and turns, even though it kind of has a slow buildup. I look forward to reading more in this world. There were some side characters who I think could do with getting their own fun fated mate as well 😉

Petals & Promises

This book is the second part following up from Clouds and Daydreams. The first book ends on a cliffhanger, and this book picks up right where it was left off.

I want to start with my negative feelings first. I thought the whole Randall situation was handled too quickly. So much of the book focused on fixing two of the alphas and their relationship with their families or bringing closure etc, that the entire end and finale to the Randall situation happened way too fast. I feel this way because so much of the story and Bailey-Rose’s trauma and fears stem from the abuse and situation from book 1. I can’t believe I am about to say this, but I wish there were more non-spicy intimate scenes. There are so many spicy scenes, some of them almost feel kind of forced and I just quickly read through them. There were some great non-physical intimacy scenes, and I just wish there was more of that as well in there. Because they all deserve that for sure.

I really love Bailey Rose. I love her child like energy and her view of the world. I love that she has overcome so much, and she just keeps trucking along. It was fun watching her experience new firsts that she has never been able to do because of her heart condition. I also like how each of the alphas meet a specific need and compliment each other, making it cohesive. This book truly was meant to heal and grow for everyone.

Finally, I am looking forward to reading Eli’s book!! I want him and Crew to have their own HEA now that Bailey Rose doesn’t have to be so sheltered.

The Naga Outcast’s Unwanted Mate

By Robin O’Connor

Rating 4 out of 5 Stars

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I haven’t read a lot of books with Naga’s in them, because I think I have just kind of been confused. After reading this one though, I definitely think I will read others.

In typical alien romance fashion, the FMC is in a shipwreck. She was supposed to be executed, only she was gassed to sleep and shipped off somewhere, though we do not know much about that. The ship, with other prisoners, land on a primitive island with different Naga tribes.

This story has insta-love for the Naga. The FMC takes a little while to come around since she is not used to being wanted. This book falls in a series, but is a completed book in the series. Each book will likely follow a different Naga.

There is some editing issues in the book, but since this is an ARC, it should be corrected by release date.

I have not read a lot of alien romances, though I have been crossing into it. My first real alien romance series was Ice Planet Barbarians. I try very hard to not make comparisons, but as I read this book, I couldn’t help but see some similarities. Whether the author is a fan of IPB or not, even with the similarities, the story stands on its own…tail ;).

I really like how the author either knows about snakes or did a lot of research, because I had to look up some things in the book because I do not know much about snakes. Also, I think one of the biggest reasons I have not really read Naga related stories in the past is because I have a hard time envisioning the spicy scenes. So…did I take a trip to google to look up Naga *spicy* photos? I did. Did it help me appreciate this story more? It did. Do I recommend this book as a new series to start? I do.

Her Feral Beasts

By EP Bali

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Her Feral Beasts captured my attention because it is very unique when it comes to paranormal, reverse harem, and shifter books. I liked this uniqueness because sometimes some books feel like “if I have read one, I have read them all.” So to see something newer is nice.

Having said the above, I did feel like I was lost for most of the book. You know there is a secret, but you don’t find out what is until the very end of the book. This secret is what drives A LOT of the behaviors of Aurelia’s mates. We meet 4 in the book, 3 from the start, and the 4th at the end. I figured out who the 4th was pretty quickly, and I have my thoughts about who the 5th is. Her three known mates try to unalive her for a good chunk of the story, and when they end up at the Animus Academy, they make her life miserable. Aurelia eventually stops being scared and is a really strong character. She finds some friends and finally feels what it means to be loved and have a family. She has been mistreated her whole life. I felt some of the toxicity was too much. I know its a bully book, but sometimes I feel that the bullying can go too far and I wonder how are they ever going to pull together for a HEA at the end of the series? This is how I have felt, because I would not forgive ANY of them. They are all jerks. So far, I am not rooting for any of them, but I am rooting for Aurelia.

I am looking forward to seeing how this story takes shape. This series will consist of 5 books, the first 4 with cliffhangers and the final book finishing the series with a HEA. I definitely recommend this book. Just be prepared for a pretty great cliffhanger that will leave you ready for the next book.

Viridios

This book is the first in a series. It is not a complete series at this time. It is set in the future after Earth has become overcrowded. Colonies of people are moving to new planets along with scientists to study the life forms. In this story, the main female character, Alaya, loves studying the ecosystem of the planet she is currently inhabiting. Alaya is not quite like the other humans who live there. They are very closed off and more extremist in their thoughts and approved customs. One day, Alaya is studying spores, when suddenly the ground rose up around her and a giant tree being sprouted. He captures her and tries to keep her as his pet. He does not understand why, but he has a strong desire to keep her and protect her. The story continues following through their growing bond and learning to communicate. I wont give any spoilers away 🙂

The story itself is quite unique. As someone who enjoys alien romance, this one was new to me. The trope is one you see a lot, insta love/fated mates, but I like how it was delivered. There was one sexy scene when he was still in tree form, which definitely was interesting! Steam wise, there is not a lot of spicy scenes, but the romance was still nice.

I gave the story 4 stars overall because of its uniqueness. It was also well written. It is not a terribly long read and can be read in one sitting. I hope more books come out in the series, because the ending set it up for more. If you are a fan of alien romance and want one that does not have much conflict, this is a good read to pick up. Sometimes having a nice palate cleanser between heavy reads is good, and this definitely helped! 🙂
